Chongqing’s drone shows have become a massive hit, lighting up the “Two Rivers and Four Banks” skyline. It’s officially known as the “New Rhythm Chongqing” Light Show.

  1. The Schedule
  • When: Every Saturday night, plus major holidays (May Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn, National Day, etc.).
  • Time: May 1 – Sept 30: Starts at 9:00 PM.
    • Oct 1 – April 30: Starts at 8:30 PM.
  • Duration: Usually lasts about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Pro Tip: If it’s raining or super windy (Level 5 winds+), they’ll pull the plug. Check local weather or the “Chongqing Release” social media accounts before you head out.
  1. Best Spots & How to Get There

The drones usually launch over the water where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet (near Raffles City).

Nanbin Road (Danzishi) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Best View. You get the perfect front-on angle with the Raffles City building as the backdrop.  Take Loop Line to Danzishi Station (Exit 2), then a 10-min walk.

Jiangbeizui (Grand Theatre)  ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Side View. Less crowded than the other spots. Great for photos of the drones mixed with the Yuzhong skyline.    Take Line 6 to Grand Theatre Station (Exit 3-1).

Chaotianmen Square ⭐⭐⭐

Up Close. You’re right underneath them, but keep in mind any text or logos might look backwards from here.  Take Line 1 or 6 to Xiaoshizi or Line 1 to Chaotianmen Station.

  1. Where to Hang Out After the Show

The show wraps up around 9:15 PM—exactly when Chongqing’s nightlife starts peaking.

  • If you’re at Nanbin Road:
    • Danzishi Old Street: Right next to the viewing area. It’s a cool mix of traditional hillside architecture and modern shops. Great for a snack.
    • Yemaoxi Market: A very “local” vibe. Perfect for sitting down for some Sichuan BBQ or tea while enjoying the river breeze.
  • If you’re at Jiangbeizui:
    • Chongqing Grand Theatre: The building itself glows at night. It’s a vibe just walking around the plaza.
    • Longmenhao Old Street: A quick ride across the bridge. It’s got beautiful grey-brick buildings and fancy riverside cafes that stay open late.
  • If you’re at Chaotianmen/Jiefangbei:
    • Hongyadong: About a 15-minute walk. It’s the famous “Spirited Away” stilt house building. Super crowded, but a must-see.
    • Daijia Lane: Located just above Hongyadong. It has hidden cliffside bars and cafes that are much chillier and less “touristy” than the main street.

💡 Final Tips:

  1. Get there early: On holidays, people start camping out an hour before. If you want a clear shot for your camera, don’t show up at the last minute.
  2. Skip the subway rush: Right after the show, the nearest subway stations are a nightmare. I’d recommend grabbing a snack nearby for 30 minutes to let the crowd thin out first.
  3. Watch the wind: It’s way chillier by the river than in the city center. Bring a light jacket!
