Like, seriously. The China today feels like you\u2019ve<strong> time-traveled<\/strong> or something.<\/p>\n<p>So I was taking the<strong> high-speed train<\/strong> across China recently, and the whole time, one thought just kept running through my head:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIs this really the same country?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first, the video showed what everyone thinks of as<strong> \u201cOld China.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Big farmlands, old buildings, historical stories, war scenes\u2014you could really feel that heavy sense of history. China\u2019s history is just so, so long. You can walk around so many cities and it\u2019s like flipping through a history book.<\/p>\n<p>But then\u2014bam\u2014the scene shifts.<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 39.6151%; height: 24px;\"><iframe style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1986626798648477%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=269&amp;t=0\" width=\"269\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Straight into \u201cNew China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And honestly, the contrast is pretty intense.<\/p>\n<p>I thought the high-speed train would just be \u201cconvenient transportation,\u201d but once I got on it? <strong>Totally different experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The stations are as <strong>huge as airports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Checking in and getting through is faster than taking the subway in a lot of other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the train, it\u2019s almost ridiculously quiet. Lots of people are either sleeping or working the whole time.<\/p>\n<p>And the craziest part?<strong> Looking out the window.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You see cities, villages, industrial zones, farms, skyscrapers, rivers\u2014all switching in crazy fast motion. It feels like watching a documentary at <strong>2x speed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And what really got me is how normal all this is for locals.<\/p>\n<p>People eat breakfast while rushing to catch the train.<br \/>\nOthers roll their suitcases along for a business trip.<br \/>\nSome just hop on to go eat in another city for the weekend, then head back home.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t feel like \u201ctravel.\u201d It feels like people have just made this<strong> speed a part of everyday life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One scene that really stuck with me was when we passed by a <strong>farm field.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One second, it was this really traditional, quiet countryside view. The next second, in the distance, modern skyscrapers and a huge commercial area appeared out of nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>That mix\u2014the old and the new right next to each other\u2014is what I think makes China so unique.<\/p>\n<p>It hasn\u2019t completely let go of the past.<\/p>\n<p>But at the same time, it\u2019s moving forward really, really fast.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of foreign visitors, when they first come to China, get shocked by a few things:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; The speed of the trains<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Mobile payments<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; The sheer size of the cities<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; The infrastructure<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; The lights and night views, especially after dark<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And mobile payments especially.<\/p>\n<p>Like, a lot of places barely even use cash anymore. Scan a code and you can pretty much do anything.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you get the feeling that China just skipped a few stages and went straight into \u201cfuture mode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But of course, China isn\u2019t just big cities.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s really interesting is watching the changes unfold when you\u2019re on the train.<\/p>\n<p>From old city centers to new ones.<br \/>\nFrom traditional culture to high-tech life.<br \/>\nFrom a sense of history to a sense of the future.<\/p>\n<p>And they\u2019re all mixed together.<\/p>\n<p>And what\u2019s amazing is\u2014they just naturally coexist.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe that\u2019s why so many people come to China and end up saying:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is nothing like I imagined.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because the China you see online and the China you see with your <strong>own eyes<\/strong>? They\u2019re really different.<\/p>\n<p>A video might only be a few seconds long.<\/p>\n<p>But if you actually<strong> come to China<\/strong>, ride the <strong>high-speed train<\/strong>, and watch the landscapes change outside your window\u2014you\u2019ll get a much better sense of what China is really like today.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not <strong>\u201cOld China.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just <strong>\u201cNew China\u201d<\/strong> either.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s more like\u2014<\/p>\n<p>A place that\u2019s charging forward at full speed, but still holds onto traces of where
